A new chapel for an Herefordshire Catholic Secondary school.
The site chosen was in an highly visible and central position within the school grounds, so that the building would become a daily backdrop to school life. Though the scale was chosen with a keen eye on budget, giving space for only one or two classes to use the building at any one time, it was important to consider flexibility so that the whole school could take advantage of this facility; the overhanging roof at one end creates a covered area, which can either be used for the congregation to overflow out from the chapel to, or alternatively can be used as an external ‘stage’, meaning the building becomes the backdrop, and the congregation can sit out on the grass beyond, enabling far more to gather. The large windows flood the building with light, and allow views out towards the beautiful countryside beyond.
